I was driving past Castle Rock on my way back home from my southern Colorado jaunt, and was inspired to play Ashokan Farewell, which was written by Jay Ungar, one of the coolest fiddlers I know of. According to the story I heard, Jay wrote this song as he was leaving Ashokan, and it was picked up by Ken Burns, who used it as the theme song for his Civil War Series.

I think you will agree that it is one of the most beautiful fiddle tunes ever written.

  • really sweet haunting melody- so many civil war tunes are like that (is it because they have the same key?)

  • @teambronte Nope, they are just haunting melodies...no matter what key you play them in.
