I would say no.. if you have preconceptions about how bass is... without having played it., stick to guitar.. your friends are idiots.. no offense. if you think bass is "easy," then you clearly are in for a very, VERY rude awakening if you attempt to play bass.

bass is harder than guitar.....people who said bass was an easy instrument is people who listen to a punk song and never heard a jazz/funk song...come on playing bass is more like playing guitar solo with a thicker string.

if your friends tell you that, you probably need smarter friends. if you don't want to get new friends, perhaps you should educate them. if it's so easy, tell them to play victor wooten's "classical thump" for you...or jaco's bassline to "teen town", or michael manring's "the enormous room", or even geddy lee's bassline to rush's "yyz", or myung's bassline to dream theater's "metropolis"...if it's so easy, why don't they get famous doing it better than all of us? get a bass, because you love it!

oh yeah, i was agreeing with you, too, 100%, just adding to what you guys were saying. I just find it funny when people (not you) say "bass is easy" (which you didn't), but then if you pressed these people to play even "simple" quarter notes to a click slowly, perfectly, it would be a joke. but these same people mostly never record themselves to see the proof, and if they do, they probably aren't bright enough or their ears aren't good enough to know or see or hear where they are off. lol cheers

Yeah, I agree with you totally. I just meant that it's easy to pick up the bass and start playing an easy bassline, playing it in time and with dexterity is a whole different minefield!

even "easy" bass lines are hard to play perfectly. tell those idiots who think bass is easy to record themselves playing even an "easy" line to a click in pro tools, then zoom in to see how much they rushed or or missed the beat against the grid. they'll get humbled real fast. all instruments are hard to play with excellent timing, impeccable feel and a degree of artistry. that's why we love sting--cause he has great time, feel and is a unique artist. rock on sting fans!!

I agree with you. I actually stopped playing guitar in order to learn bass, it's such an awesome instrument. Anyone can play easy basslines, that's kind of obvious, but when people say bass is easier I just tell them to check out Jaco Pastorius, and then I ask them kindly to go fuck themselves...
