A short explanation of the expansion of Los Angeles and the destruction of the Owens River and Valley. Many Paiute Indians lived in Yosemite and Hetch Hetchy but were pushed out as Yosemite became a park and Hetch Hetchy was dammed and the water diverted to San Francisco. Many Yosemite-Mono Lake Paiutes were swindled out of their water rights around these and other ancestral areas for the new gold, water. Many Paiutes who were forced out of Yosemite, Hetch Hetchy and the Mono Lake area and were promised farm land around Owens Lake. Later after some Paiutes settled with the Owens Valley Paiutes this water was taken for the expansion of the City of Los Angeles. Paiutes used to irrigate the area for taboose and wai, native plants that we Paiutes used to cultivate and eat. Clara (Hess) Rambeau, Yosemite-Mono Lake and Owen's Valley Paiute. Granddaughter of Paiute Young Charlie and Great-Granddaughter of Paiute Captain Jim of Bridgeport and Hetch Hetchy area speaks about the Native American Paiute angle to this story. Paiute means "Water Ute", but we are Indians without water.

  • Hey, I had to write a short essay on this documentary, but only had my scant notes to rely on, since one of my classmates beat me to the library. Anyways, thanks a ton for posting this, it's been a huge help!!!

  • Tell your instructor, the Paiutes said you deserve an aaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy!

  • JESUS CHRIST IS KING OF WORLD!

  • @frontosa6 lol duh LA was unsustainable before mulholland to.

  • LA admitted nothing. It was only after YEARS of lawsuits which they lost that water is being replaced.

  • What makes restoring Hetch-Hetchy more difficult,is; San Francisco's attitude that they "have the God given Right to the water in the dam at Hetch-Hetchy". LA has admitted that their water rights were ones got by political wheeling and dealing. SF is in denial about how they got O'Shaunessy Dam built...I too hope to walk the valley floor in Hetch-Hetchy,even if I have to live to be very old to do so...

  • Restoring Hetch-Hetchy is nowhere near as easy, but I hope to see it done in my lifetime.

  • LALA Land shouldn't be where it is. Remove it, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and we are all a lot happier. I know, make the cities close to the water. But then how would you confiscate huge tracts of land? Remember, the Mormon Hierarchy will lie, burn, steal and kill just as cruelly as these monsters.

  • Thanks again! Got the A, full credit!

  • Me and my friends did a historical performance this year on this subject and made it to the National Finals in Washington, D.C. This subject is very crucial to the understanding of how progress ultimately devastated an agricultural community, just to sustain a booming city. Very interesting!
