Modern Folk Quartet (MFQ)
Chip Douglas, Cyrus Faryar, Henry Diltz, Jerry Yester
This Could Be the Night
Produced by Phil Spector, Arranger: Jack Nitzsche
Recorded: Gold star Studios, October,1965

Henry Diltz: ... We went into the studio and cut a song called "This Could Be the Night", a Harry Nilsson tune, and it had the whole Spector "wall of sound". Part of the sound was to have lots of guitars, lots of drums, lots of bass - not just one of everything. So anyway, we recorded this song, and Brian Wilson came down when it was finished. He'd sit in the control booth wearing pajamas, robe, and slippers, listening to the song over and over and over again. We didn't talk much, but we loved having him there, cuz we loved the Beach Boys. Everything seemed to be going real well, except that Phil never put the song out.

  • Damn... the things Spector could do with echo. This might be his most genius production and that is saying something.

  • Great song. Love it, like most Spector productions. I'm not sure if it would have been a huge hit though. Maybe it would have sounded too far out and people wouldn't have understood it.

  • SEASONS GREETINGS,

ONE OF THE BEST PHIL SPECTOR ARRANGEMENTS EVER!

    THANKS FOR POSTING.

  • Henry Diltz sings lead on this gem. I wonder if the band knew at the time this song appeared in the film that Spector was going to crush the tune by not releasing it?

  • KROQ rules.First heard it there in "82.

  • @DoorsBeyondDoors I'll agree this is one of my top favorites of Phils. I particularly like seeing the stars and the crowds reaction. Is it just me or is Cher one of the girls sitting in the front row swaying to the music? Anyone know?

  • @smokeemonkee I love it!

  • @cherrykitten68 Moving to Austin is a smart thing to do.

  • I am a relatively new fan of Phil Spector (being born long after his heyday of 60's hits) and I gotta say that this is one of the greatest songs he ever did. Too bad that this wasn't released and/or more collaborations weren't done with this band.

  • I just recently moved to Austin from LA.... I left all my friends and family and everything behind in LA but the only thing I miss is Rodney on the Roq
