I once rigged a 75 hp Mercury on the back of a 13 ft Whaler, per the request of the customer. It was so over powered that even I was scared to push it.
you can put a 50 on a 13 whaler ... we had an old "RED" 50 merc on our 13 6 forever , and it never had problems or was dangerous at all. Now my homemade popular science 1960's "Shingle" with a 10,.. now thats dangerous
had to reply, i know the boat. Cover is off because its the first time in the water with the 50 and the choke was cranky and carbs out of tune; getting the kinks worked out: over a year and a half now without a problem. This was the maiden voyage. But as far as iluvgreenday43 and micers comments: Bad boater? not a chance. Accident? That isnt a fresh water water pond, and they dont happen from an extra ten horsepower...id love to see your skills shine at the boat ramp.
Most 40 and 50 hp motors are the same motors, the 50 just has bigger valves, bigger carbs, more rpm,This motor has a slow hole shot, probably needs plugs, and carbs rebuilt....But runs good after that! Order some 40 hp stickers for the cowling
we have a 13ft 1979 model with a fifty on it and it is so fast ... u just have to drive it with the trim... great shallow water boat since it has so much hp it plains out very fast and shallow
i hope those other commentators dont see the videos of 15 foot whaler's with 90's on them they might hurt themselves, boat looks like fun! im guessing the cover's off for repairs or tune up?
That is nuts. The hull is rated for 40 hp, you are 20% over the rating for the hull. Have an accident with that, even if it is not your fault and you are the one sitting dead in the water, and you are going to get sued.
Top speed on that set up would be about 40 or 45 MPH.
