@AUInnocent It depends. In this situation, I would think the thumb would help. The gable grip, however, is a LOT stronger without using the thumbs. Also keep in mind all the other submissions this can set up. This sets up the inverted triangle, the omoplata, and the carnie. Lets not forget sweeps - there's a flower sweep and/or arm bar here as well if u trap the far side arm before using this technique.

I have been doing that since 93 lol the gracies were tell me that's wrong! yet I would go kimura triangle arm bar off of that. I like going kimura on the left arm like omoplata then shooting a triangle at the other side.

@1lostinspace there are always different ways to get moves in jiu jitsu. Even in the GRACIE family, there are variations on moves.
