You always need to put the ATA in directly in back of the customer's modem then from the ATA to their router(s). Occasionally doing this makes our ATA not light up all the way. Sometimes this can be fixed by unplugging both the ATA and Modem and then restarting the modem first, letting that get synced up and then plugging in the ATA and see if it syncs up. If it does then you don't need to clone the MAC address, if it doesn't then you probably have to clone the MAC address.
In some occasions you will need to clone the MAC address. First you need to go on the customer's computer where the modem is hooked up to and find the computer's MAC address. In windows you can do this by going to the command prompt (in Windows XP go to "start" then "run" in the bottom right hand side. A box should pop up then type "cmd". This will put you in DOS mode. Then type in "ipconfig /all" without the quotes and hit enter. This gives you the ip addresses as well as the MAC address. The tricky part is finding the MAC. It is typically towards the top and under "ethernet adapter local area connection." There is also a wireless network connection section. You don't want this one, you want the ethernet connection. If you look down the list under "ethernet adapter local area connection" you will see "physical address" and this is your MAC address you will need. Copy this or write it down but don't include the hyphens.
Now you need to go into the backside of the Linksys ATA. Open up the browser and get into it by typing its address in the address bar. The address to get into the ATA will typically be 192.168.0.1. If this doesn't work it's because they have another router hooked up. You can then try 192.168.0.2, 192.168.0.3 or 192.168.0.4, etc. until you are able to get into the ATA.
Once there, you need to login as an Admin. Click on "admin login" up top. The username is always "admin" and the password is the MAC address of the ATA found on the back. Now click on "advanced" in the upper right, this gives you more options. Now click on "wan setup" under "router" and on the left hand side in the middle you will see "MAC clone settings". Now click "yes" to enable MAC clone service and type in the MAC address you found earlier without any hyphens or colons. Click "submit all changes" and the ATA should reset itself for the changes to take into effect. The power light should be solid now and you can activate the ATA.
@suran88 It won't always start with 00, despite what this genius on YOUTUBE says...
