CoR Rapporteur Kay Twitchen-Obe on the importance of the Convenant of Mayors

The Covenant of Mayors is an EU initiative, which aims at improving energy efficiency significantly in the urban environment through a formal commitment by the cities to reduce their CO2 emissions. Almost 150 cities throughout Europe, including 15 capitals, have expressed their willingness to join.

CoR President Mr Luc Van den Brande has urged Members to sign on to the Covenant of Mayors, since the sustainable energy goals of the Covenant will only be attainable with the political support of local and regional governments. Mr. Van den Brande said: "The active participation of local and regional authorities in the implementation of the Covenant is indispensable to ensure a significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Europe. Only as partners can we ensure that we meet our climate change objectives."
