Just when you think Dr. Kopplin has run out of ideas, he reaches back to deliver another fastball (a little baseball humor). Still another full house and another creative program for the Spring 2009 Show at the Music Recital Hall.
Brett Woods is yet another of Dr. Kopplins vocalists in the True Big Band tradition. The Music Department held the 5th Singer Songwriter Showcase on Thursday, May 14 at 8 p.m., an evening of original songs written and performed by Cal Poly Pomona students. Directed by Professor Arthur Winer, the 5th Songwriter Showcase features works by Dustin Alcantara, Lucas Blankenship, Candice Brown, Sherinda Bryant, Anna Carbonel, Kalia Iha, Eric Pham, Wayne Ingram, Kateri Lirio, Nicholas Ventura, David Pugo, Patrick Wolfe, Jorge Rangel, Brett Woods and Gabriel Zuniga, along with many special guests. Proceeds from the concert benefit scholarships for Music Industry Studies students.
"The Way You Look Tonight" is a song featured in the film Swing Time, originally performed by Fred Astaire. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1936. The song was written by Jerome Kern with lyrics by Dorothy Fields. The song was sung by John "Lucky" Garnett (played by Fred Astaire) while sitting at the piano. Penelope "Penny" Carroll (played by Ginger Rogers) was busy washing her hair in an adjacent room, and feeling anything but beautiful at the time. From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia
With his Bowtie and V-necked Cashmere, Brett is trying to look the part of a 1930s college student. Dude, Fred Astaire isnt a college student in Swing Time (1936). Oh well, artistic license I guess.
The Cal Poly Music Department encourages their Students (and Faculty and Staff) to explore the Trails of Creativity, both Predecessors and Current Pioneers. If you like the Progressive Student-empowerment Programs of Cal Poly, visit the Music Department at http://www.class.csupomona.edu/mu for more information. The Best University Jazz Show in Southern California and its still only 7 bucks (just raised to 10 bucks - still cheap!) Try spending that in Downtown LA.
