For me, this tune by Charles Mingus is defined by it's distinctive chord progressions. There is a somwhat jumpy, discontinuous structure embedded in the chord changes that gives the song its signature sound. I thought this post was a fairly good demonstration how minor changes in the chord structure can give a song a very different feel. Most of the chords have not been changed, just re-voiced to give a more continuous flow between the chord changes with a slightly modal orientation.

It's easiest to learn this tune's chord changes in six groups of four chords each. The original chords can be found in The Real Book Vol I.

I used a simple quantized bass and a one measure drum loop in GarageBand to serve as a metronome. It's a minimal backtrack. I think I was too loose with the time, and would do that part of it differently if I record it again.

Lot2Learn did the digital keys for me. Thanks Lot2Learn!

  • This is really great. It definitely captures the spirit I believe Mingus intended for the tune. I listen to this regularly - it leaves me in a good state of mind - thanks!!!

  • Thanks so much, teleman55!

  • What exactly do you mean by "block chords?" Sorry for the dumb question.

Also, can you recommend any books in particular for a beginner learning to improvise jazz piano solos in a way that sounds legit and authentic? And also covers LH comping while soloing in the RH?

  • MatthewPA, I sent you a p.m. to answer your question.
