Lithophanes are artworks created in thin material, that can only be seen when the material is illuminated from the back side. The thinner the material, the more light can come through, so a picture will result.
Lithophanes are easy to create on a CNC milling machine, using the DeskProto CAM software. You can use any photo (JPG, GIF or BMP file) to create your lithophane.
This video is about a special type of lithophane: a plastic pipe that is lit from the inside. The result can be used as a lamp-shade.
