While playing in the Holcome Rucker touney in Harlem, Julius used to show up to participate in the warm up line where all the guys used to show off their high flying arsenol of dunks. At first glance the announcer gave Julius the nickname 'Baby Hawk' after Connie Hawkins. Julius would show up for games carrying a black satchel bag with his Converse in it. Once the announcer got a look at him with that bag he said "Looks like the Doctor is in the house!" and the rest is history.

This may or may not be true. In the NBA at 50 documentary film, Nate "Tiny" Archibald said he got the name because when he was on the court, he "operated" on guys.

Hubie Brown, the narrator would fine his players for letting Doctor J dunk on a fast break. He also mentioned when Doc entered the NBA and won All-Star Game MVP honors, gave one of the most tremendous and inspirational acceptance speeches of all time. The NBA established looked down at ABA players as inferior and Doc basically spoke up for them and said the trophy was vindication for the ABA players. Julius was much more than a spectacular ballplayer. Great vid.

doc always knew what to say, im from philly and grew up watching doc in the 70's and 80's..the philly fans and media can be rough. but the doctor always had good manners no matter how rough they were. he never complained or replied negatively. doc was so real that he stayed the course on his mission to win a championship and all the fans knew that by the way he played. everynite he made fancy moves but it was all in either to win the game,playoffs or finals. he was a once in a lifetime player.1!
