(Used Palm Pre to videotape this, and then tried to resynch the audio/video later- ugh). We need a YouTube application that does what TweetDeck does to Twitter. Whatya think? YouTube as the platform, but some really easy interface that is a stand-alone application for Mac and PC. I know the Flash limitations would preclude it from working on mobile, but can you IMAGINE how cool this would be?

Here are my thoughts... please add! Not a profit venture. Just want to make it easier. Renetto is talking to a guy named Nick about building this... see his video from a few days ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQSu_680lYE

Goal:
-Make the YouTube grazing experience simpler and more personalized. Highlight important functionality that is available but buried. Provide easier access to common things (comments) that are now requiring multiple clicks (click channel, find video, click video title to see comments, select "all comments"). Allow people to prioritize subscriptions so we don't miss our favorite creators because we've oversubscribed to people (but know that it can be rude to unsubscribe).

Must Haves:
-Ability to "super subscribe" to select channels to receive e-mail or text notification when they post. That means we don't have to unsubscribe to people, but we can designate certain creators as "super" subscriptions, where we'd like to be pinged (via e-mail and text) when they have a new video. I believe there's a HUGE hidden demand for this alone!
-Ability to instantly access the LATEST videos by our favorite creators/channels... not default to whatever they feature. Again- helps even the noob find someone's most recent video, which is almost impossible for someone not familiar with the new channel page toggles.
-Ability to search a specific creator's videos... again something that is hard to do on YouTube and I believe impossible via mobile devices.
-Commenting on a video should be pushed into the comments of YouTube not reside in the ap. This is important, since we want to make it easier for a creator to see his/her comments and reply to them... and not have to click the channel page, then find the video, then click the video title, then comment (too much work).
-When you click a channel's name, you see their profile, links to their most recent videos, maybe their playlists (which are completely buried in the new channel page), and a prominent search box that queries ONLY that creator's video (I find myself wanting that quite often).
-See my nalts channel banner as example of how I'm trying to work around the limitations of the new YouTube channel page...
-Better use of comment_search functionality, which is hidden on youtube. That way I can quickly see where my favorite creator is commenting or being mentioned (or ego surf)
-Related videos: this is a big driver of views, so ideally the user would have more control of these, instead of it always being the same 10 top YouTubers.

Nice to Haves:
-Ability to import our YouTube subscriptions and limit our views and activity only to those whom we're subscribed. We'll still use youtube.com to find new creators, but this would make our regular check-ins less overwhelming and we'd probably watch more.
-Cool bonus: when we look at "most popular" it's the most popular of ONLY those we follow... don't like Fred? He'll never show up in your most popular. In other words, you can control (by default those to whom you're already subscribed) what you see in this app. When you "block" someone, they don't get blocked or unsubscribed from your youtube account so they don't get offended. They just don't show up in your box.
-The "home" page of this app could have more prominent links to "most popular of day, week, month" because it wouldn't be full of professional content, spotlight videos and ads. Right now it's uncommon for someone to dig into popular daily videos because the homepage is throttling the top creators who are locked in top place because they've cracked Youtube's secret algorithms.

  • i thought if we could get a comment opposition to hide all comments but only let friends comment and where only them can . not the hide the ones that are not friends but still let them comment .

  • @StaIkerOfNalts r u really stalking him? thats creepy.

  • the effects r cheezy sorry. i still like to listen to what u have to say, though... =3

  • Don't forget about the nalts iPone app. You talked to A.J. recently, Kevin?

  • Tell YouTube/Google to release a stable API for everything you need and applications will just start showing up.

  • I think YouTube is in an adjustment phase still after the new channel layouts happened. A desk top app that does everything custom for the hard core tubers would be a huge asset for the users and YouTube as well...We definitely need better navigation of videos, comments, and our subscriptions.

  • @renetto Good to see the wheels spinning...
