"touchdown signal detected" at 7:53 p.m. eastern time. which actually happened at 7:37 since it takes 16 minutes for the signal to travel from mars to earth.

the phoenix mars lander was launched 04 august 2007.

From and including: Saturday, August 4, 2007
To, but not including : Sunday, May 25, 2008

It is 295 days from the start date to the end date, but not including the end date.

phoenix mars lander soft touchdown north of mars' north pole.

the lander has a robotic arm which will scoop up permafrost, vaporize it to study chemical compounds.

1st u.s. probe with landing legs, stabilizing thrusters since viking in 1976.

  • Atmosphere doesn't mean air. Atmosphere refers to layers of gasses that surround a planet (or even a moon, not our though). And these gasses can be anything. Our planet is surrounded mostly by nitrogen and oxygen, that is our atmosphere. The atmosphere of mars contains mostly carbon dioxide. Our moon isn't surrounded by anything else than the vacuum of space, therefore it has no atmosphere.

  • would your eyes bulge like in total recall or could your try to breathe before collapsing on the rustic rocky surface next to a small rock hunh!

  • i dont understand it if a planet has a atmosphere doesnt mean it has air in it? because of the rubbing against the shuttle that tries to land? on the moon it doesnt happen? weird i really need to learn about this things

  • Mind the 225 GW magnetic storms tho

  • You realize without proper gear like space suits completely air tight your blood would boil in space right? But I lke the idea about the platform.

  • There are alot of sci-fi books that discuss this... would be neat if it actually worked. We'll all be dead long before though. :(

  • Mercury is closer to the sun then Venus... buy a science book.

  • um no its not venus is the closest planet to the sun so we would burn up instantly

  • they should build a lander for neptune or pluto or same were around

  • We should build a floating platform on venus, at 50 kilometers above venus surface its practically the same as here on earth, you can even go out with only a shirt and jeans. You will only need an oxygen tank, plus venus is closer to earth than mars.
