These four baby red-headed Amazon River turtles (Podocnemis erythrocephala) are very active in this video. In fact, three of the four appear to be in a race at one point. This species has previously only reproduced once (in 2009) at the Tennessee Aquarium. These eggs were incubated at 88 degrees and at that temperature took between 60 and 65 days to hatch. They weigh 10 grams and their shells are about 4 cm long. These babies will be maintained off-exhibit but adults can be viewed in the Amazon tank in the Rivers of the World gallery on Level 2. This species is considered to be vulnerable by the IUCN and there are only a few specimens in U.S. zoos and aquariums.Learn more about these species at: http://www.tnaqua.org/OurAnimals/Reptiles/RedheadAmazonturtle.aspx
