The ancient ritual, the ZUKRU festival is the earliest Syrian example of an Autumnal New Year festival drawing comparisons with the Israelite feats of unleavened bread and booths. The ZUKRU marks a new beginning when the city of Emar is rededicated to the city's chief deity, Dagon. The festival marks a sabbatical year and the whole seventh year was set apart for the festival, reminiscent of Israel's sabbatical year (Leviticus 25:1-7). In this text, Dagon's passage between upright stones outside the city appears to reestablish Dagon's dedication/rule over the city.
