does it jump around when you bash the hell out of the dashboard? thats how i deduced it was a bad connection somewhere in the dash rather than the electronics.

its hard to tell. Did you move the needles when the car was running? if so you may have damaged something else. Normally, if you tap the dashboard and the needles go mad, then its probably a loose connection and will be fixed by this solution.
