I sneaked away from my company on Christmas Day in 1969 to see the Bob Hope show in Chu Lai. Half of the guys were allowed to see the show and half had to stay on alert. I hadn't seen a donut dolly since arriving in Vietnam in August. Hard to be away from home. As I sat among the hundreds of GIs, I thought this would be a good time for Charlie to mortar us. But the Communists were smart; they would have lost the war if they had killed Bob Hope because everyone in the World loved him!
