Greater Than One - Darkness (1985)

Lee Newman and Michael Wells formed Greater Than One in London, circa 1985. The group was created to explore art through performance, recordings, and installations. They released albums on Graeme Revell's Side Effects label, WaxTrax! and ROIR in the USA, Torso in Europe, and their own imprint, K=K.
In 1990, they started releasing singles as GTO (because it was easier to spell) and Tricky Disco (to explore more techno and house music). As the rave scene of 1991 exploded, Newman and Wells started releasing singles as John + Julie, Church of Extacy and Signs of Chaos. They would later release albums and singles as TD5, The Salami Brothers, and Technohead.

The UK cassette-only release for "Lay Your Penis Down" is limited to 50 copies, and comes in a hand-made box with a Chrome 30 minute tape, as well as individually wrapped enclosures, including: a squirting rose with 'Genital' printed on it, a black wax sculpture of a head with 'Godking' printed on the outside packaging, a matchstick in a tiny envelope with 'Ridden' printed on it, stickers wittily exclaiming 'Lay your Penis Down', and a metal weather vane (very heavy) wrapped in paper with 'Destiny' printed on it. Also include are various envelopes, such as: one with 'Blood' printed on it and containing a bandage, one with 'Motherfucker' on it and containing a tiny Union jack paper flag plus a clip of around 8 super 8 images of a figure (Lee? Michael?) in front of another flag, one with 'Faith' on it and containing a fortune telling fish (!), one with 'Secrets' printed on it and containing a tiny mini blank book, a UK paper wage packet printed with 'Energy' and containing a square piece of copper, and an A5 size black and white photograph of Lee.

1985 was a excellent year in darkness, my first apartment ever and got to listen to MY stuff(this was one introduced to me via WMUC-88.1 College Park, Maryland).

Thanx 4 this; We Are a RARE Breed for obscurity.
