Our Red Heeler has fluid retention and requires regular extraction using a 18 gauge hypodermic needle. We got as much as 2 litres in the past and we managed around 600-700 kl this time.
The pressure becomes so great that he has trouble breathing as the fluid compresses his internal organs.
We have paid a vet in the past to under take this procedure but they constantly make a mess of it. It can be done at home provided some basic care is taken. Its important that the end of the lance dose not pierce internal organs.
There will be some secondary bloat between the skin and stomach muscles but this disperses after several days.
The fluid is acidic and will irritate the skin around the area of penetration. This dog is also on Vetmedin and Frudix tablets. The vet states that the fluid retention is caused by a heart murmur but talk with other vets and they will all tell you their own thoughts on what causes in.
This dogs mother died recently after the vet misdiagnosed Pancreatitis with Diabetes and subsequently died in our arms after the pancreas digested itself which caused the dog to die of starvation and dehydration.
The vet was consulted the day before her death and he failed to recommend that the dog be put on a drip to make it possible to stabilize the Pancreas and allow enzymes to once again reproduce which would have replaced the balance in the digestive tract.
