Bicycle+Helmet Safety For Kids by Toronto Police 14 Division

2-4-1 Rule for proper fitting of a bicycle helmet for kids, and the A-B-C rule for bicycle maintenance checks(Air-Brakes-Chain)is explained to kids by the Community School Liaison Officer (CSLO) of 14 Division Toronto Police Service.

Three 'Bike Rodeos' for kids were held the week of July 21-25, 2008 to educate youth on the proper way to wear their bicycle helmets, ensure their bicycles were well maintained, and educate the kids on the rules of the road for cyclists.

Special thank you to the kids and camp counsellors from the three participating youth centres - St Alban's, Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club and the Harbourfront Community Centre.

Thanks to Proaction Cops and Kids http://copsandkids.ca for their funding for the prizes for the kids, and the helmets for the kids who didn't have helmets.

Thank you to the Toronto Police Service Community Mobilization Unit for your dedication to making the booklets on bicyle/helmet safety and the rules of the road for the kids to take home, read.. and be safe on their bikes.

Thank you to the Youth in Policng Initiative students for helping out with this event.

An added bonus on the last of three bike rodeos this year was the participation of the Toronto Crime Stoppers Community Youth Program led by Detective Larry Straver and Constable Scott Mills

Along with messages of bicycle safety, the kids were advised on how they can anonymously get information in to police to help PREVENT crimes, help SOLVE crimes and help to locate MISSING CHILLDREN and ADULTS in one of three ways:

The public is urged to register their bicycles with police in an effort to deter bicycle theft, and facilitate a recovered stolen bicycle being returned to its rightful owner.
