This was such a sad death scene. After all the pain she had been through, Asuka was finally herself again, and finally able to pilot Unit 02 again...to die right after making such an amazing comeback is tragic.

@chasslez she also wouldnt have been able to develop as a character which wouldve been a worse fate. also we all know this scene wouldve happened anyways since shinji is useless and rei is gone at this point leaving only her

If you want my honest opinion, Asuka should have gotten it worse. I know, I know, every fanboy out there is gonna rage, but think of it this way: It was her own hubris that got her pwned by Arael, as Rei was supposed to lead, not her. If she had obeyed orders, she wouldn't have gotten mindraped, wouldn't have been in a coma, and probably would've been able to change the events of the attack.
