The Admissions Committee of the United Nations Security Council met on Friday to discuss the Palestinian application for full membership as a state.
The standing committee on the admission of new members to the UN includes all 15 Security Council members and the meeting on Friday was attended by their U.N. delegates.
Lebanon's U.N. Ambassador and current Security Council President, Nawaf Salam said, "As you know the committee on admissions of the Security Council held its first meeting this morning to consider the application of Palestine and it started its consideration of the matter.
"It decided to meet next week at the expert level and the chairman of the committee will report in two weeks to the (Security) Council on the work of the committee." he added.
Palestinian U.N envoy Riyad Mansour said he hopes the committee would be able to review the application quickly in order to report back to the Security Council on their findings in the shortest time possible.
Western diplomats on the council say the Palestinian request might be rejected due to U.S. opposition.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas handed in Palestine's application to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on September 23 on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly and said he wants the U.N. body to review it within the next few weeks.
Security Council resolutions need nine votes in favor and no vetoes from the five permanent members in order to pass the bid.

There will be no peace until Palestine gets statehood. Israel and Palestine should be encouraged to agree to let Palestine have whatever land is NOT in dispute and resolve the issues as to disputed territory on a level playing field (i.e., after Palestine is recognized as a member of the U.N.).
