21 - Time Traveler: Voyage With Columbus - 26 & 27

It's September 24, 1492, and you're still on the Santa Maria. The great, lonely ocean stretches mile after mile, and life on board ship is worse than ever. The meat tastes spoiled. The water is going bad, and it's running very low. You've been sailing for weeks, but there's no sign of land.

The sailors have never been this far from home. They're scared and beginning to get angry. But when they complain to Columbus, he only says, "Trust me. We must sail on."

Your friend Scarpio is worried about all this.

"Mark my words," he whispers. "We're going to have trouble. This ship is sailing under an evil star."

You try not to think about it, and keep yourself busy. You have your own secret calendar. With a penknife, you've been marking each day on a slab of wood, to help you keep track of time.

Today , as you work on deck, everything seems peaceful. The sea is calm. The afternoon is clear. Even Romano, for the moment, is staying out of your way. Suddenly--BOOOM!

The Pinta, sailing nearby, fires a signal. Her captain, whose name is Pinzon, starts shouting.

"Land! Captain Columbus! There's land off the port bow!"

Everyone turns and looks where Pinzon is pointing. Sure enough. Against the setting sun, you can see low-lying cliffs!

The sailors shout with joy. "Land! We're safe!"

Columbus changes course and heads for the cliffs. As for you, you're very puzzled. According to your calendar, this is only September 24. You know Columbus reached land on October 12. What's going on? Can all the history books be wrong?
