Installation "Pollock In Action" took place during the Kunsthausnacht at January 27th, 2007 in the Kunsthaus Zürich (http://www.kunsthaus.ch).
"Pollock In Action" is an Action-Painting simulator. Based on Stamen's Pollock sourcecode I built a physical interface to virtually paint like Pollock. The actual color was replaced by light.
The brush is made from wood. Inside it: Accelerometer, Arduino-mini, EasyRadio RF-Module, RGB-LEDs. The accelerometer data is transmitted to the computer over serial (over air). The computer sends back the color information for the RGB-LEDs.
The color is changed by pointing the brush into the paint buckets.

  • If this is art... then everybody is a Pollock

  • @alpsify totally agree with you. if you had read the description or visited the website you'd know.

  • like watching paint dry...haha

  • @161803 :-D

  • watch closely at him working and youll see he knows exacly what hes doing and is precise like a surgeon, nothing to defend really... americans just tend to make entertainment out of everything and make things very shallow... but that has nothing to do with his work... the movie shows that actually

  • hello, i agree with you. BUT, i'm not american, nor was the project or the location. it seems, people don't read the info about a movie before they post a comment. i think the comments are very interesting though, provoking lots of different discussions. thanks for this!

this very project was meant to be (it acually was!) a fun interactive toy. it doesn't judge pollocks work at all. it's a modern interpretation of his techniques. in contrast to pollocks work, this is not art, it's an experiment!

  • Pollock believed in art changing over time, and through this type of program the art is left to the chance and whim of many. It's many perspectives of art, if you will, form an artful consensus through artistic manipulation and compromise.

Pollock would approve of this, I'm sure. The nay-sayers call the creations derivative, but I've never seen identicals to those creations, and the inclusion of self in artwork makes the point void of reason. Even identical twins are not the same person.
