This is why I prefer the book it has more nuance. In the book, they're not rotten exactly, just set in their ways and not really narrow minded (I mean, where did Lady Groan come from. In the book it's suggested she was a commoner like Steerpike). They didn't hate Steerpike because he was lower-class. They didn't even acknowledge him or realise his ambition until it was too late. It's hinted Gormenghast is one of the last bastions of humanity in a post-apocalyptic world.
Sorry for the lecture!

I've always been on Steerpike's side - I think terrible things happened in that kitchen.

A lunatic dance? GOOD HEAVENS! Forget the murders and killings, there was a lunatic dance in Gormenghast! WE SHALL NOT STAND FOR IT!

in the books steerpike doesn't have the excuse of being abused in the kitchens - he had only just been employed by swelter when he escaped, not been there since he was 6 years old

aww...poor satan

i love that, the duchess presented with the cold facts of steerpikes deeds and the one that disturbs her enough to repeat and elucidate upon is " a lunatic dance? here in gormenghast?" wonderful, sure u can read into it about her belief system, of perception of position and duty, that would be dull, but i remark upon it as there's such glorious dialogue through out, i must grab a copy of the novel to read.

is that monkey's name satan??

Steerpike most likely would not have been evil if he wasn't abused in the kitchens, but who knows? Just a thought

I'm sorry but Titus' mom really pissed me off through this whole thing; caring more for her bird and cats then her own children and then realizing she is in trouble towards the end and tries to save herself

Do you think, they would realize to STOP CALLING HIM A KITCHEN SLUG!? Goodness gracious..

@Sapphonouveau If that's how it is in the books, I still find myself siding with Steerpike ambition. Even though I haven't read the books it just seems to me he wants to BE someone. He wants to say, "Look what I've done right under your noses! Now when you look at me, you'll see me!" He's like a strong gust of wind that sends a stack papers flying about. They sure changed a lot for the series. Ah well, it's still good.

@lovedd1213
they are not related by blood, what she means is they are wet brother and sister, she is titus's wet nurse and thinks of him as one of her own in that way.
