Respectful and inclusive language is essential to the movement for the dignity and humanity of people with intellectual disabilities. However, much of society does not recognize the hurtful, dehumanizing and exclusive effects of the word "retard(ed)." It is time to address the minority slur and raise the consciousness of society to its hurtful effects.
Highland Elementary has stepped up to this challenge and held a school wide assembly to help share this important message. Students from kindergarten to sixth grade have been involved with the production of a video that shares their feelings and beliefs on the impact of the R-word. Many have stepped up to take the pledge, to say that they will no longer use the R-word. Highland Elementary would like to share that challenge with the community; can Billings be courageous enough to take the pledge?
The ending was just what I was hoping for! Thanks for making sure *those* kids were included in your project. That's a very important part of what kids need to learn too.
