Stone pond constructed may 2011 at Blackhill, near Consett, Co. Durham.
I really should have taken some footage of the stages involved in the pond construction as there were alot of different skills used during building.
The pond is approx. 2.7m x 2.7m (9' x 9') with a curved front and is approx. 0.6m (2') deep. The wall which acts as a raised bed to house the cascade is made of a blobkwork wall (over a concrete foundation) faced with selected walling stone.
The top of the wall is made from walling stone which has been hand cut to act as coin stones which would normally be found on a dry stone wall. The wall is secured with cement at the back of the stones (so cement can't be seen) which gives the wall the 'dry stone' effect. The vertical capping stones are secured with cement.
Pump for cascade ia a Pondtec 2500 which is rated at 2500 litres per hour.
Filter pump is an Oase Filtral 5.000 - see review of this filter in my pond playlist.

  • is the filltral pump good for small ponds with lots of fish

  • I suppose it would need more regular cleaning if there were lots of fish so I would either go for multiple filtrals or a decent size pump and filter which would ultimately be less running cost and less maintenance. And less cost provided you got a pump which didn't cost loads to run - i.e. Aquamax or similar.

  • Alrighty! Thanks for your help!

  • No problemo. Some of my other videos have step by step building of ponds on which will be more help as you'll be able to see the processes involved.

  • That's really beautiful! I love the water fall that you have. Just wondering, did you come up with the design or did you find it online? I am building a pond in my back yard and I am trying to build a waterfall. Any advice? Thanks!

  • The design of the pond part was down to the customer but I built up the raised bed and just shaped it as necessary.

For building a waterfall, just make sure that is lined under whatever you build and that the liner rises well above the sides where water could escape if leaves caused the water to back up in the stream.

I always cement cascades as then the water is forced to go exactly where I want it to go.

  • No probs. Thanks for watching. My next pond video should be much better as it was a fairly complicated koi pond. I flmed all the stages of construction so will do a proper step by step video of that one when I get the decking job done around the bottom end of it and its finished.

  • There are larger filtoclear filters available now. The 20.000 has a 36w UV and the 30.000 has a 55w UV. They are PLS bulbs so cost a fair bit to replace compared to the standard tubes. I think I've got a 20.000 on order for my shop so I'll do a video of it when I get time.

  • nice richard, been looking at a few of your pond vids tonight u get sum joy out of it ,, i also like to use oase stuff but never understand why they ownly stick small uvs and same size think 11watts in all filtoclears,,, small wattage and 5 year garentee on their pumps makes up for it i guess :)
