Getting My Cast Off

I broke my ankle in two places during roller derby practice with Black Eyed Susan Skate Shop in Baltimore (the three owners are retired Charm City Rollergirls -- I was training to become a DC Rollergirl).

I broke it on Saturday, May 16th. Had surgery the following Thursday where they put a plate and 7 screws into my ankle to hold the bone in place. 12 days later, I got my soft cast replaced with the pink that you see here.

I was in this one for four weeks. So my leg has been in a cast of some sort for over 6 weeks.

Now comes the hard part - physical therapy!

@przybyla8 I had basically the same injury as you but i had an additional surgery to remove a nail. I started walking with the boot n crutches after bout 2 months so the doctors determined that i didnt need surgery vause i healed fast. Do you have any suggestions as to how i can do physical therapy at home? I know i wont ever be 100% but i want to be able to do some of the things i used to do

@BigT125 I would get a stretch band. Not the tube kind. They won't let me put a link in the comment, but look up Valeo Resistance Exercise Stretch Bands. There are different stretches you can do with that to gain flexibility. I don't remember them all, so I'm sure you can Google instructions :) Also, use steps. Stand facing forward toward the step, stand on it with the balls of your feet only (heels hanging off) and do lifts (standing on your tip toes basically).

I broke my ankle in 3 places! I got my cast 3 days ago.. I had a semi cast called a sling for 2 weeks after my surgery (which I got a plate and 6 screws) i get the cast off in 2 to 3 weeks then getting a boot. I was wondering how long til you started normally walking again? And how bad the pain was with therapy and losing the muscle in your leg and stuff. I'm pretty nervous :(

@fablehottie You'd want to ask your doctor, but walking casts are special. So if it's not specifically a walking cast, then no, don't walk on it, use crutches. Plus your arms will get strong and hot.
