Considering that each LED uses 20 ma. of power each, that represents a huge waste of power. There has got to be a better, more conservative way to do it. This isn't it. (Now, if the LEDs were multiplexed, that would be feasible).

@TheMrBlinx with continuous 20mA at 3.3V (and 8 LEDs like in the design showed in the video) you need around 0.5W. This is a worst case scenario and allows achieving a range and bearing system. This is at the same time not so much for this type of robot (the CPU alone takes 1W) but could be improved a lot, fully agree with you. The goal here was to do experiments, not to have a production robot. For experiments, the colors that are visible to the user help a lot in understanding the process.
