In this beauty-and-the-beast love story, Rita Tushingham plays a mute orphan girl who is sold to fur trapper Oliver Reed as his unwilling wife. He drags the terrified girl to his remote cabin in the woods.

The film is set in British Columbia, Canada, in 1849. Great wilderness scenery, and a terrific score by Ron Goodwin. Impressively, Rita has not one word of dialogue, playing the role entirely with her eyes.

This copy is a direct transfer from a film print which, strangely, has German titles but an English audio track. There are a few problems with the audio -- it occasionally loses sync or changes pitch, but those problems were intrinsic to the film print.

This anamorphic 16:9 letterboxed presentation shows the film in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio.

  • i was still a child when i saw this movie. I was deeply impresed and thought about it all the time for a long time after. I also loved its music score and had it my mouth all the time... I think "the trap" was a very honest film of its time, a film that can be seen and enjoyed all times... An Rita, such a good and promising actress in the sixties and early seventies!!! Unfortunately have not heard much of her eversince!

  • @philipposathina I agree, this film seems to have a "haunting" quality -- it stays in your mind for many years. I don't know if it is because of the great acting, or the music, or because the story is archetypal (man & woman working together to survive).

Yes, Rita is such a good actress and such a nice person too. I met her in 2011. She has continued to act, right up to the present day, in smaller films and tv. A gracious and unpretentious lady.

  • hi , can any1 tell me the name of the song in this movie ? i have been searching this for ages but dont know the exact wordings or the name . plz any1 ?

  • @burgler79 The song that La Bête sings are simple lyrics to the MAIN THEME. There is no special name for this song. It is simply, "lyrics to MAIN THEME FROM THE TRAP". If you listen closely, you will find that La Bête sings the following lyrics:

    When I'm a man, I'll take me a wife.

We'll live in a house on the hill, the hill.

With carriage and horses all white, all white.

And she'll have diamond and pearls, and pearls.

And she will have diamond and pearls.

  • @rjd0309 T hank you so much for your message! I was rather too young to appreciate the film for its archetypal story, but i was certainly impressed by the wild landscape it was shooted in, the intriguing script, its realism, and of course its "photograph" and music. Thanks for the news from Rita! If you happen to see her again, please tell her about me, let her know she' s got my respect and give her lots of regards from Athens-Greece. Thanks again!
