Even if we assume god did these things to better humanity or to guarantee the survival of another book. Then as usual it is yet another contradiction. It is a flagrant and barbaric violation of humans supposed "free will". The truth is far simpler. Humans are like any other animal on this rock. We are capable of being butcherers at the drop of a hat. It takes no god for this and there is no god. Getting over ones self perceived or externally taught specialty can be a tough one.

@TooFreakinLazy No not quite a mental contortion, its perfectly logical given unchallengeble premises: (1) God purposes everything, even calamity and is always moral (right) (2) The then current calamity benefited Hitler (3) Therefore God had gone over to Hitler. So by this mindset, even calamity, atrocity and disaster demos god's power and celebrated (as for example by the westboro baptists). Its an anthropomorphism of an indifferent uncontrollable universe, so looks like capricious agency.
