With the war in Iraq about to enter its sixth year, a group of students from Glastonbury High School made their voices heard Friday.
About 25 of them braved cold, windy weather to attend a rally at the intersection of Main and Griswold streets, holding signs listing the war's costs and calling on politicians to recall U.S. troops.
"I just strongly believe that violence has to end," said senior Hannah Kluger, the rally's organizer. "And the war is costing a huge amount of money."
Kluger talked about the rally to students in the school cafeteria and in hallways, in addition to printing fliers and creating a group on the social networking site Facebook.
Many students said they came because they wanted to dispel the notion that their age group doesn't care about politics.
"People know that we care if they see us here," said Emily Jessen, a senior. "We're learning about our world and making a difference."
"We're not materialistic teens that are only concerned about iPods," another senior, Lauren McLellan, added with a laugh.
Mary-Kate James, a senior, went to New Hampshire in 2004 to volunteer for Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry's presidential campaign. She said she hoped to make people aware of the Iraq war's negative effects by attending the rally.
"If more people see this, in the long run, it will help," James said.
The Glastonbury rally was loosely affiliated with others held throughout the state Friday, including one vigil in downtown Hartford.
The protest, in front of the Federal Building on Main Street, attracted about a dozen people, a few of whom have come every Friday to protest U.S. military action abroad.
"We want to keep it alive that this war is wrong," said 88-year-old John Stamm of Hartford. "When the war started we had a lot of people, but the last year or so, it's been very small."
Ive fought in Iraq twice! I am ashamed to say I went to GHS....but you know what? because I fought in the war you were able to post this video....you are welcome, Im going to Afghanistan next.....Dont worry your support is not needed...
