Immigrant Irish played a large part in building much of the infrastructure in the United States. (As well as Canada, the UK Australia etc.) Here, are some photos of Irish and other immigrants such as the Chinese building the transcontinental railroad.( the Chinese were an important part of building America's Railroad)

  • Have you ever heard the Dubliners' version of this song? I think it may be even better than the Wolfetones'. Anyway, thanks for posting this vid, America seems to take for granted all the work our Irish great-granfathers did building this country!

  • Yeah It's been done by quite a few groups. I think I have it by the Dubiners some place as well. I don't know why I used the wolftones for this one though lol.

  • God bless the Irish!

  • Most of the men who built the Union Pacific were Irish, as were those who built the main line of the Pennsylvania including Horseshoe Curve. The Central Pacific was built by Chinese.

  • My dad used to sing this to me as a lullaby! I can't believe how much it brings back <3

  • I used sing this song in primary school!

  • I am singing this song in my choir, i love it!! I'm part Irish so...

    GOD BLESS US IRISH!!!!

  • I am singing this in my choir and it is such a beuatiful song, i know, i'm a part irish!

    GOD BLESS US IRISH!!!!!!1

  • Even though my ancestors arrived in this country well after the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad (in the late 1910s), I still feel strong ties to this song, nevertheless. It's probably because I'm half-Irish and am a self-acknowledged nut when it comes to trains and railroads; I even wrote a college paper on the Transcontinental Railroad!!

  • @GenghisKhan44, not exactly. Those "buildings" were known as dormitory cars, where the laborers slept (kind of like a precursor to modern-day sleeping cars).

  • What the heck is going on at 1:22? Are they transporting buildings on flatcars??

  • Good slide show. Love the song and love this version of it.
