When we eventually get to the other side, so will many of the things around us. Some wil be faster and ahead of us, while others slower and behind. We also won't be in a nice plane but oscillating "above and below" the galactic plane. And there is no guarantee that something won't get too close and sling us off "course". Imagine interstellar navigation going to a place that moves 3 directionally as we do.
