I just had to post this as it was one of the most spectacular things I have ever seen at the festival. Here in North Thailand the Loi Krathong Festival is much different than anywhere in the Kingdom. In the small town of Mae Jo north of Chiang Mai they started the festival on Saturday night by launching hot air balloons calld "Khom Loy". I went with friends and took this short video. We are not talking about a few Khom Loy but thousands upon thousands all at the same time. You got to see this.

  • that was astounding and beautiful. More than kung pow chicken. That was great, I just learned about this secret. There is a spiritual thing about those lanterns. Neat. Don't try to count them all.

  • amazing, cool ..

  • 3,000 balloons were set off from the same area at this years festival (Nov.2010)

Sukothai is THE place to be for this festival.

  • I never know about the bad thing of counthing them. But there is agreement between people and airline about the time of floating the balloon. In some certime period of day, the floating would be prohibited.

Airlines also reschedule some flight to avoid flying over the sky fulled of lantern.

We have this only maximum 3 days a year so everybody try to work it out.

If you have been there you will learn that lantern is not yet the biggest problem but firework is!

  • nice video..i miss it..:)

  • firehazard!

  • what happens to them when they burn out?"Not a lot they just fallto the ground I live not far from this site in Mae Rim they not only let these balloons off at Loy Kratong but New Year etc. any major road has pick up trucks parked selling these balloons they are made out pf paper the heating is done with a sort of firelighter you hold them down till they are hot enough to take off then you light the fuse on the firecrackers. Good fun
