    Yea, I am not trying to undermine the importance of the Imperial Guard. I am just saying, the marines were crucial to the formation of the Imperium as well. The Emperor first united the Earth with the help of the marines and then continued on his crusade.

    It was the Emporer who united humanity not the Primarchs or the Space Marines. The Primarchs where his most trusted generals (when they where found) and the space marines his elite soldiers. The initial number of space marines, may have been great enough to conquer and control a few star systems. You can compare it to the roman military with the famous Legionaires. However the bulk of the armys where always formed by the auxilary troops.

    40K, and the movie itself is almost textbook Imperial Guard vs Tyranids anyway.
