actually crossing your arms is a staple of some guards that I know of, barrier guard for instance HAS to involve crossing your wrists and then unwinding them, as stated by Joachim Meyer and his german methods. its easy to recover from crossed wrists all you have to do is unwind them and it actually helps transition into a good krumphau (Crooked Hew.)
