I heard that their suspension was just until the day of their formal expulsion hearings.

I don't think so. Tear gas is better used for riots, it spreads out over a fairly long range and can take a little while to dissipate, especially if fired indoors. For an incident like this, using it could potentially hurt innocent bystanders.
They should stick to night sticks, pepper spray, and tazers. That way, they can properly deal with the idiot protestors, and not worry about potentially injuring civilians.

leddyjr, when listing their demands, you forgot that they also demanded that NYU give free scholarships to Palestinian students.
Indeed, a big part of the reason why this whole protest was so pathetic was because their demands were so unreasonable, and would have been massively difficult if not impossible for the university to meet.
