In 1992, BEST OF THE BEST (Original Master Karaoke) was released in Japan as a two-CD package; one CD was entirely karaoke, minus Karen's vocals; the other CD consisted of the original songs with Karen's vocals.
I created this video to give the viewer/listener an idea of how the Carpenters prepared their songs. First, there was the work lead which consisted basically of bass guitar, drums, and piano and Karen's work lead. This was recorded, then played back in the studio for Karen and Richard to add their background vocals in the chorus parts. The recording from that session was used to add more instruments, such as strings and woodwinds, and more overdubbed vocals. Finally, the last recording was played back in the studio minus Karen's vocals which had been recorded on a seperate track. Karen would then sing a new vocal track while listening to the music track. There are a few instances of the work lead being so perfect that Richard used it as the final cut - songs such as "Superstar," "Now," "Trying to Get The Feeling Again," to name a few.
For this karaoke video, you are essentially listening to what Karen might have heard in the studio while singing a new vocal track. This video gives the listener a better idea of Richard's skills as the arranger and producer of their many hits, while also starkly demonstrating just how much Karen's voice is still so sorely missed by her many fans.
