What the fish?!

@veterano1976 Well actually, this used one stationary background that rotated smoothly, whereas Sonic 1's special stage used separate sprites for each angle of the rotation, this made the rotation less smooth and more rigid than on the SNES.

I believe what you are talking about is the game Marble Madness.

(sunlightblessing) I believe it was a game called Marble Madness for the NES.

Mode 7 is the 8th (because they're numbered 0-7) mode for background layer manipulation. It defines a single, scalable, rotatable layer. I'm pretty confident that's what we're seeing here, but would certainly welcome correction. Super Mario Kart & F-Zero used mode 7 to make it appear as though your vehicle was racing through turns even though it actually was fixed in place while the track moved around you. For it's time, it was a pretty cool effect/illusion I think.

@Nintendough I thought Mode 7 was for first person effects, not rotation.

Why's this called Cameltry, there's nothing to do with camels.
Welcome to Mode 7.
