A short account of my trip to Haiti in early August.

I'll admit I was hesitant to travel to Haiti, in the aftermath of such a devastating event. Soon after I arrived, that initial doubt and fear dissolved. The people I met were nothing but kind, engaging and welcoming. The seas of tattered, makeshift tents were the only signs of hardship and heartache; the Haitians themselves seemed to be tapped into some inner well of resilience and happiness. Wooden signs everywhere read in chipped paint, "God is Good!" and "Be Filled With Joy." A long time ago, my dad read me this quote from Julias Caesar:
"Men at some time are masters of their fates:
The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,
But in ourselves..."
Everywhere, whether in Port-au-Price or Cité Soleil, I saw Haitians grasping the meaning of these words, the same words it has taken me years to comprehend. They have chosen to move forward, rather than wallow in self-doubt or pity. They've taken hold of the fate of their country, and we can help to shape their vision into reality.
