I miss seeing Avner! What a fantastic performer. When I was getting started, I tried every one of his bits I could remember. After decades of performing, now they inform my work, but nothing is left of the Avner "steals". It is good to study the work of others, but the earlier comment about the strength of one's own work is spot on. Avner remains a master and I would love to see him perform again soon! Come to Minneapolis!!!
I think this is a testament to musical selection also. I watched Shinya's peice to some music by Circus Contraption and it got infinitely better. As far as copying, I think all physical comedians steal bits and peices from each other. Shinya did change it up a bit and I though he is no Avner (not many of us are) he had some originality in the peice. I like what he did with the broom swinging around as well as stomping it on his foot. He overreacts a bit making it seem less beliveable.
It's funny-The guy doing Avner's material isn't doing it very well. Quite simply,he does not have the technical background that Avner has in timing and movement awareness. However, when he did his own bits, they were pretty good! The lesson? Your own material is stronger than anything you steal. Your own material is ultimately what you have to create to be successful
Its not where you take things from but where you take them too.
