1986 Honda V Formula 500 Cup
This was a new race series to try and promote the 'sporty' pedigree of the new 70bhp Honda VF500F road bike.
Regulations were very strict with very little in the way of modifications allowed to change the bikes other than a Motad exhaust.

Riders include:
Ian Burnett
Keith Nicholls
David Leach
Alan MacDonald
Geoff Johnson
Ken Dobson
Ian Young
Phil Armes
Chris Brenneck
Steve Mason
Steve Bonham
. . . amongst others !

Hold your breath at 5:51 :o
Apologies for the 'average' quality, as it's been transferred from an old VHS tape found amongst a huge box of over 250 of them, in my attic.

  • I have one of these with 56k on it which has given me three trouble free summers.

The analysis of "getting the best" from the VF500 by getting a smooth fast line is spot on because with 70 bhp from a middleweight there is enough in hand to get you into big trouble if you overcook it (as the tank slapper shows)!

First time I made a similar mistake I was lucky not to go down, fortunately only my pride was injured as I time to back off... and get overtaken GaH!

  • SOOO GREAT =)))

  • Ack - is there a part 2?? Who won?

Fun race. That backstretch was really bumpy - you could see the guy's rear suspension bouncing right before he lost it.

Announcer gets props, too - every bike the same color, all with the same (really aerodynamic) number boards, and he never missed a beat.

  • Where are these bikes now? I need parts! Great bike!!

  • watched this live got it on video some where. had a vf400 years ago. great to to see it again thanks ian.

  • @InstantChicken No, it looks like a tank slapper; when the bars twitch back and forth slightly and then it builds more intense until you lose control. Thats why modern bikes have steering dampers. Anyway, This is a GREAT video and I cant wait to get my '86 500 out to a track day.

  • Best race ive ever seen. The Le Mans start rocks, and the crash was very intense, too bad he lost his first place :( Seemed like the front fork broke under the hard pressure?

  • @paintslinger2009 Oh my god. Are you serious? ;O OMG!

  • i got the vf500f 1984 it beats any new 250cc

  • thanks iv been looking for this for a long time iv got tha vf500f2 an the 750 .tha 500 is tha better 1 thanks
