Hugh Cornwell, the original guitarist, singer and main songwriter in The Stranglers, enjoyed massive success with ten hit albums and twenty-one top forty singles in the 17-year period that he was in the band.
The Stranglers etched themselves into the nation's musical psyche with many hit singles, including Peaches, No More Heroes and Golden Brown. Cornwell quit the group by stepping off the stage at a Stranglers sold out gig at Alexandra Palace in the summer of 1990 after announcing that it was the last time he would be fronting the group.
Since then, Hugh has released five studio albums, Nosferatu (1979), Wolf (1988), Wired (1993), Guilty (1997), Hi-fi (2001) and Beyond Elysian Fields (2004). In response to public demand he has also released Mayday, a full live band set; and In the Dock, a solo acoustic album, featuring many Stranglers classics. The catalogue is completed by the release of Footprints in the Desert, a compilation of rare and unreleased tracks from the last ten years.
Hughs book The Stranglers: Song By Song was published in November 2001 and gained massive media coverage. In the book he sets the record straight, displaces the myths and explains for the first time the real stories behind the Stranglers extensive catalogue of songs.
Hugh joins us on Friday 28th July at 4:30pm to talk about his new album, Dirty Dozen. The live album will feature tracks from Hughs solo career as well as a collection of Stranglers' classics. Recorded during his residency at Islington Academy in 2005, Dirty Dozen is a 'highlights' album culled from the triple live album People; Places; Pieces'.
I am a fan from way back and actually met them and did an interview in 82, I think it was really a drag that Hugh split but actually the band carried on and did some very high quality music that is in many cases as good as it ever was...they continue to play and I think are still GREAT!

Thanks for uploading this. I've always admired Hugh's articulate manner and his determination to keep doing new work beyond The Stranglers. Having said that, I still entertain the vague hope that finally, eventually he will reunite for at least a few showcase gigs with his old mates in The Stranglers. If Roger Waters and the other Pink Floyd chaps could bury the hatchet for that famous gig, I'm sure the original Stranglers could do so too. Dream on...

I can't think of any survivor of the punk era who's still performing and remains dignified other than Hugh Cornwell.

you brits are lucky. wish flying was cheap I'd go to any of his shows. also, why are my favs (strummer and cornwell) always so humble, so great! I have such a disdain for the attitude of so many rockers. even as mr cornwell mentioned - lou reed??? What does he have at this point is worthy of attitude? perhaps in the seventies yes, but not now... his knew stuff is crap!
