So Nick, Marc, and I were bored in mass media... What else is new? So we decided to test this effect out. It is known as the "Dolly Zoom," the "Jaws Zoom," or the "Vertigo Zoom."

It can be seen in many movies when a character looks down from a very tall height and gets... vertigo! Most famously, Vertigo, when a character looks down from a tall height; Jaws, when the first shark attack takes place and the camera zooms in on Chief Brody; and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, when Frodo first encounters the Black Rider on the road. Here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y48R6-iIYHs&feature=related

It didn't really work at first... but as soon as class ended, I figured it out! :D Apparently there are some complicated mathematical equations that go into it... I don't really know... More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolly_zoom

  • Yeah, you do need a dolly for this.

  • More capital V neck stretching would add to the vertigo effect.

  • Nice try. I think you need to use a dolly to do it properly though? I've no idea how Hitchcock did it, that clever bastard.

  • ow.. my leg(s) (famous sponge bob quote - actually i think it was squidworth)..

not feeling the dolly zoom thing tho, but nice try.. and i certainly could not do better..
