but why change something that was so good in the first place? the female vocals that letters to cleo provide and the guitar solo just give it that . . ooumph whereas this is just too different for me, i appreciate they have tried to make their version somewhat individual but i feel that it doesnt really work :/

I disagree. The Letters To Cleo version is so close to Cheap Trick's "live" version (as compared to the studio version which featured the piano solo instead of a guitar), it's redundant. It might as well have been karaoke. The Hedrons at least tried to make their version distinct and singular.
