The Lord Brassey gold stamper battery at Kirwan's in the hills behind Reefton on the West Coast of New Zealand's south island is a 15-stamp array. Its framework was built originally from hardwoods felled on the spot, but these have now rotted away. In restoring the battery the Department of Conservation must use plantation softwoods - the problem is to treat these in such a way that they will last at least as long as the original hardwoods. This You Tube describes the sawmill processes and the chemical treatments used.
