A simple video showing a very small number of handy commands that can be used in the Bash shell. Yes I have missed out a lot, yes there is much more I could add, please, if you would like me to make another video with anything extra, please do ask.

Commands covered:

pwd - print working directory
cd - change directory
ls - list files and folders
man - to view the man file of a command
mkdir - create a directory/folder
rmdir - delete a directory/folder
touch - create a file
cat - view the contents of a file
nano - editing a file
rm - remove a file

Watching it through again, I realise that there is a lot that I have missed out, for example being able to view the files in another folder ('ls /path/to/folder') and the command buffer (using the up and down arrow key to go through your command history), and other non-file based commands (like 'top' for the dynamic process list and 'ps' for the static list). Maybe I'll remake it, maybe I'll make a new video. We'll see.

  • What command do you type to clear the terminal screen? Like cls is for command prompt in windows.

  • @Pottsy1981 well I've learnt something myself today, I didn't know that! In Linux it's 'clear' :)

  • i can't get into the "help folder at the beginning of the movie, it just says: No such file or directory.

    Using Ubuntu 10,10

  • @Baxtexx the 'help' folder I change into is one that already exists. It's just an example, use the 'ls' command to view what folders are in your current location that you can change into using the 'cd' command :) hope this helps!

  • really liked this video. cheeers! :)

  • Glad I could be of help :)

  • @Pottsy1981 clear

  • could you plz do more ubuntu commands 101.

  • good video, simple. learned something new

  • @Pottsy1981 clear

  • thanks for this, i'm a complete windows person here and need to get a handle on the terminal commands for IS security, any other terminal videos would be a great help

  • @staticCable Do you understand that this is only a more productive way to use Ubuntu? If a user of Ubuntu didn't want to try the terminal commands at all, they wouldn't have to! They could simply use the GUI (graphical interface, basically the desktop etc) to control it like you would Windows. It's not for everyone, obviously, like gamers. But why do you think it's terrible?
