Given the awkward navigation and low effective resolution here (try reading dense labels at 4ft), what benefit is purported over a plain 2K/4K panel and more convenient TrackIR or SpaceNavigator-style 3d control?

Yes, the CORNEA was designed and integrated by Mechdyne, including the computing cluster to drive it.
